🏠 International Day Of The Family 15 May



The theme of this year's United Nations 'International Day Of The Family' is "Families And Climate Change". Climate change negatively impacts the health and well-being of families through increased pollution, while extreme weather events exacerbated by climate change, such as hurricanes, droughts and floods, often lead to forced displacement and loss of livelihoods for families and individuals. The 2024 International Day of Families aims to raise awareness of how climate change impacts families and the role families can play in climate action. Through family and community initiatives, we can foster climate action with education, access to information, training and community participation.



Introduction ...


You could begin this session by asking members to bring in a family photograph, so that they can show it to members. It would be helpful if they did this for their care partner to write names on the reverse of the photo.


Bear in mind, members may not remember names, so it would be helpful for you to know about their family before the session. Also be aware of losses and unhappy family lives, to avoid bringing difficult memories to the fore.



Some discussion points:


- How big are/were members families?

- What were mother's and father's names and jobs?

- Where did members grow up?

- Was their family a large or small one?

- Did they have brothers and sisters, or were they only children?


- What about now? Ask members to say a little about their spouse and/or children and grandchildren.




Discussion point ...


Show members this photo of the Radford family, from Morecombe, Lancashire. They have, as of last count, had 22 children. They own their own bakery, so are not reliant upon state benefits. Sue, aged 46, and Noel, aged 50, had their first child when Sue was 14.


Discuss with the group the pros and cons of having a large family.
