The Swinging 60s



This CST activities page celebrates some of the highlights of the 1960s.


Begin the session by asking members what their standout memories of the 1960s are?

Which members are 'Baby Boomers', born between 1946 & 1964 during the post-World War baby boom?

How old were members during the 60s, were they infants, schoolchildren, teenagers or young adults?

Discuss 60s culture, fashion, music and TV & movies.


Ask members to say what these 1960s slang phrases mean?



- "Outta sight" (so great or unbelievable you couldn't take it in)

- "Fab" (exciting and fantastic)

- "Groovy" (cool, impressive)

- "Far out" (awesome)

- "Bummed out" (depressed or upset)

- "Souped up" (improved, usually relating to a car's speed)

- "Having a blast" (a good time or a loud party)

- "Catch some rays" (sunbathe)

- "Flower power" (Hippie movement)

- "Hang loose" (take it easy)

- "Laid back" (relaxed)

- "No sweat" (no problem)

- "Pig out" (overeat)

- "Right on" (I agree)

- "Wipe out" (fall off, usually a surf board)

- "In the groove" (part of a crowd)

- "Uptight" (tense and unable to enjoy life)

- "Shades" (sunglasses)

- "Threads" (clothes)
